Ashworth Reservoir

Easter 2005 Working Party

Following the flash flood in August 2004 when the river crossing point on the Ashworth Reservoir concessionary ride at Cheesden Bridge was seriously eroded, a group of bridleway members met on Good Friday 2005 to try to make the path passable again.

Armed with wheelbarrows and shovels and aided by the warm spring sunshine we were all ready for action. Unfortunately, as the pictures tell, it soon became apparent that wheelbarrows and shovels plus willing manpower was not to be enough. The erosion was beyond our wildest thoughts.

Oldham Groundwork were called in during 2005 and a fabulous flat bridge crossing was constructed from very large (and heavy) railway sleepers. The path was scheduled to be opened again in April 2006, but alas, this was not to be the case as three weeks after the bridge was complete, overnight it miraculously disappeared. We have been waiting now for over a year to get a gate put into the fence to allow access to a ford crossing which has been constructed.

At our February 2008 committee meeting it was agreed that this would be one our first working parties of the year. So all you strapping lads (and girls of course) watch this space and come and help when the date is arranged so at least one of our important concessionaries can at long last be reopened.
