March 2011

Dear All

Just a reminder that if you haven’t paid your subs for this year they are now due.  £10 for single membership and £15 for family membership.  You cannot ride in the concessionaries if you are not a member and if you have an accident your insurance will be invalid.  There’s a membership form attached to this letter.

Bridleway News

·         Lea Holme

The council have agreed to move the gate at the back of Lea Holme Farm and this should hopefully be done soon.  The Landowner has also agreed that the gate which comes out on Edenfield Road can be moved back slightly so that we are not struggling right by the road to open and close it.  This should make it a lot safer.

·         Scotland Lane (Dunham’s)

We have had a quote to do some work on Scotland Lane on the Bury side as it’s always extremely muddy during wet weather.  It looks like it’s going to cost quite a lot of money but we have £1,150 which was donated specifically for this area a few years’ ago to put towards it.  Concerns have been raised that if we do this work and don’t put some kind of drainage in that it will be a waste of money so the original quote has now rocketed to just over £5,500.  We aim to do some fund raising events and also try to obtain some funding from other groups, eg ramblers, cyclists, etc.  We will keep you informed of any progress on this.

·         Heap Road (near old Norden Chimney)

Some riders have been experiencing problems from an aggressive man who lives at the end of the Ginnell on Durnford Close.  Don’t take any notice of him and keep riding it.  The upgrade to bridleway has been approved by the Council and it is with their Legal Department (for two years) for finalisation.  We have advised the Rights of Way Officer about the problems being experienced and she has spoken with the people involved to try to resolve the problem but he is still moaning!!

·         Castle Hill Road

The planning application for the wind turbines on Castle Hill Road was rejected last week, however, he is going to appeal the decision so we’re keeping our eye on this one.

·         Path Behind the Dexine Development (Redrow)

The developers are going to be doing some work on the Chimney on the old Dexine Path.  We don’t know exactly when but the path will be temporarily closed.

Reviews

·         AGM

A lot of people turned up for the AGM and we have got quite a few new members this year.  Roger Mee is now Chairman, a vote of thanks was given to Gill Ridings for the work she has done during the last three years.

·         Map Reading

We held a night to give some insight into map reading and getting proper map references, etc.  There was a good turnout to this and again we got quite a few new members turning up.  I can’t really say too much more as I didn’t attend due to the speaker being my husband and the lack of a babysitter.

Dates for Your Diary

·         Monday, 28h March

Towing and the Law.  We have a lady who teaches towing coming to speak to us so if you want to learn about pulling a trailer then come along.  8.30 pm at The Pack Horse.

·         Monday 18th April (EARLY BECAUSE OF BANK HOLIDAYS)

Baileys Horse Feeds will be enlightening us about their range of products and hopefully will bring along some freebies.  8.30 pm at The Pack Horse

·         Monday, 23rd May (EARLY BECAUSE OF BANK HOLIDAY)

We are hoping to hold a table top sale, £5 for a normal sized table, eg 4ft x 2.5 ft,  You are then responsible for selling your own gear.  Venue to be confirmed.

·         Working Parties

We are planning to hold working parties on the 2nd Wednesday of each month.  The first one will be on Wednesday, 11th May on Mile Canter.  The path is being washed away so we want to try to do something to help that but also cut overhanging branches and saplings which are taking up a lot of the inside edge of the path.  7.00 pm start.

8th June is Nabs Wife and 13th July is Broadoak in Bury.  Further details to follow.  Any help you can give would be really appreciated.

Treasure Hunt

We are holding a treasure hunt on Sunday, 24th July, starting and finishing at The Pack Horse.  Teams of 4 and if all are members the entry fee will be £8, non member teams will be £10.  There will be rosettes to 4th place and they will be presented at the meeting on 26th July.  More information will be available shortly.

Le Trec

Another event being looked at is the possibility of holding a Le Trec competition but this is in the very early stages of planning and a suitable venue needs to be found.  A sub-committee has been formed to look at this.

Norden Carnival

The theme for this year’s carnival is “Around the World in 80 Days”.  We are hoping to have a walking group in this year so if anyone wants to join please let us know.  The last time we entered we won the Best Walking Group prize.  The date is 18th June so put it in your diary.

Website

We are getting a good number of hits on the website some from as far away as Japan.  Most hits come In the days before and after our meetings.  We are thinking of having a members’ forum area on there which is in the early stages of development.  When its up and running we’ll let you know.  Also, don’t forget there is a classified page where you can advertise anything you want to sell.  Send your ads via the “contact us” button.

50/50 Draw

Don’t forget to enter the 50/50 draw.  The prize currently stands at £50 so its well worth winning.

British Horse Society

As part of the conditions of our affiliation with the BHS this year they have asked me to send them details of all our members.  I didn’t just want to pass this on without you knowing so can you please let me know if you DON’T want your details forwarding to them.  They are offering a 30% discount to bridleway members who want to join.

One for the Road…

A city dweller came to a farm and saw a beautiful horse. He decided he had to have the animal. He bargained with the farmer and the farmer finally sold him the horse. The city man jumped on the horse and said, "Giddyup!" The horse didn't budge. The farmer explained, "This is a special kind of horse. He'll only move if you say, 'Praise the Lord.' To stop him, you have to say, 'Amen.'" Keeping this in mind, the new owner yelled, "Praise the Lord!" whereupon the horse took off with great speed. Soon horse and rider were headed for a cliff. Just in time the rider remembered to say "Amen!" The horse came to a screeching halt right at the edge of the cliff. Relieved, the rider raised his eyes to heaven and exclaimed, "Praise the Lord!"
