January 2011

Dear All

Happy New Year... let’s hope its a good one for everybody.

Subscriptions

Subscriptions are now due and a renewal form is attached to this letter.  Can you please complete all details on the form and either bring it along to the AGM or post it to me.  Subscriptions should be paid before the end of February, anyone who hasn’t renewed by then will be contacted to return their Greenbooth key.  We would like everyone to complete a form this year to make sure we have up-to-date information.  Please note that as advised last year Family Membership has been increased to £15.

We would also like to remind you that it is a condition of membership that you have third party insurance to ride on the concessionary routes.  You get third party insurance included with Gold Membership of the BHS for however many horses you have and that costs £59 per year.

Bridleway News

·         Lea Holme

The council have still not done anything about the gate behind Lea Holme but we have raised the issue again.

·         Scotland Lane (Dunham’s)

We have got two more quotes for this work but the council have now said that they work has to be carried out by a contractor who is approved by them so we are now contacted one of them.  No objections have been received about this money being spent on this project.

·         Castle Hill Road – Windmills

A planning application has been submitted to put two windmills on land adjacent to Castle Hill Road (near the chicken farms) in Birtle.  We have submitted an objection to this as the proposed site is only 15 meters from the bridleway and could cause problems for some horses.

Dates for your Diary

·         31st January 2011 – AGM

Bring your subscription form and payment along to get your new membership card for 2011.  Re-election of Officers and a chance for anyone else who wants to join the committee to put their names forward.  The 2011 social calendar will be available at the meeting.

The meeting starts at 8.30 pm at The Pack Horse in Birtle.  Refreshments will be served.

·         All other meetings are on the last Monday of the month unless its a bank holiday when its a week early.  All meetings will be at The Pack Horse unless otherwise stated.

Reviews

·         Cheese & Wine at Naylors

Once again we had a good turnout for this and everyone enjoyed having a bit of a spend, and a bit of a chat and some good cheese and wine.  We would like to thank Ben for opening specially for us and giving us the extra discount.

·         Christmas Meal at The Waggon at Birtle

There were 16 people who attended this year’s Christmas Meal and everyone had a really nice time.  The food was excellent.

·         Boxing Day Ride on New Year’s Day

9 people turned up for the New Year’s Day ride which was a good turnout considering what the weather was like.  I didn’t go as I had a bit of a hangover!

50/50 Draw

We will be doing another 50/50 draw this year in April so if you want to join please add £5 to your subscription.  You can have as many entries as you like.  Last year’s winner was Lynne Larcombe who won £67.50.

Mary Townley Loop

An update for those of you who sponsored Gill, Rosie and Jessica Morrell to do the Mary Townley Loop for MacMillan Nurses and Rossendale Hospice, the group raised £1,060 to be split between the two.  Well done.

First Fall of the Year Award

The award for the first fall of the year goes to Alison Palmer who fell off in spectacular fashion in front of most of the congregation of St Vincents Church, full hi viz was worn at the time so absolutely no-one could miss it... this happened at about 11.30 am on 2nd January so if anyone can beat this let me know.  Alison was unhurt as she had a nice soft landing!

And just to finish off....

A white horse walks into a pub and asks for a whisky.   The landlord says: "Hey, we've got a whisky named after you." The horse replies: "What, George?"

A poorly-looking horse limps into a bar with a bandage round his head. He orders a glass of champagne, a vintage brandy and two pints of Guinness.
He downs the lot and says to the barman: “I shouldn’t really be drinking this with what I’ve got?”
“Why, what have you got?”
“About two quid and a carrot.”
